The reunion that meant the most to me in “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” was not Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, who are reviving their roles from the 2017 original, but the reunion of Desperado stars Selma Hayek and Antonio Banderas. They’re still two of the most fiery flammable actors in the world and it’s a pleasure to see them together again.
But the focus of the story is on Reynolds, who returns after the book as triple-A-rated bodyguard Michael Bryce, and Jackson as Darius Kinkaid, a “rules what rules?” , plus Hayek as his runaway wife Sonia. In other words, the usual super-me vs. id match-up in action comedies with lots of car chases and explosions and hilarious banter.

In the first film, Bryce was disgraced for failing to protect a world leader and reduced to protecting wealthy businessmen when he was sent to Kinkaid on his way to testify against an unscrupulous dictator to get Sonia out of the To get prison. This time around we see that the experience seriously traumatized Bryce when his therapist angrily tells him to go on vacation somewhere far away from bodyguards and, most importantly, away from guns and murder.
But no one would buy a ticket and go to a theater to see this for the first time in more than a year. Of course, once Bryce settles in a beach chair, Sonia comes with blazing guns (many innocent bystanders are killed in this film) to get Bryce to help her rescue her husband from some kidnappers.
After that it’s pretty much bang / bang / banter (“Capri? How the pants?”), Bang / hunt / explosion / joke (“Your mouth needs an exorcism”) in different colorful places. There are some references and cameos from the original film that will only interest the most loyal of fans. What plot is there is unlikely to be of much interest beyond an engine to get us to the next shoot-out or take. Frank Grillo and Caroline Goodall are underutilized as American agents who decide to use the kinkaids for their own ends, and even Banderas can’t make much of his general villain. Rebecca Front is great as Bryce’s frustrated therapist in a brief opening scene, but then disappears for the rest of the film. The action scenes are usefully staged, but what doesn’t come as a surprise here is the fun Reynolds and Jackson have with their roles. Jackson could probably let off profanity better than anyone else while doing a backflip and knitting a sweater, but the cool thing is that he never brings less than his top game and it is never less than delicious. And Reynolds has the very rare ability to make fun of vulnerability. Pass on the popcorn. Summer movies are back.

Parents should know that this is an intense and gory action comedy with car chases, explosions, guns and knives. Many characters are injured and killed with some graphic images. Reynolds spends much of the film spattered with blood. There are family problems and there is always very strong language. There are sexual references and explicit (humorous) situations and discussions about fertility.

After more than a year of pandemic-induced stay-at-home orders, audiences are eager to hit movie theaters and reunite in a dark room with a larger-than-life big screen and booming sound. As theaters slowly open up, studios are gleefully releasing titles in preparation for what is hopeful to be a profitable and exciting big summer launch. Will “Hitman Wife’s Bodyguard” kickstart the action? In 2017’s “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” with his reputation destroyed after a painfully unsuccessful delivery of a distinguished Japanese client, triple-A protection agent Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) was reduced to a second-class bodyguard for hire, accepting an offer from Interpol to escort an international assassin, Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson), from Manchester to the Hague. The mismatched duo were forced to put aside their grudges with comedic, action-driven results. However, with his beloved Sonia (Salma Hayek) now behind bars, Kincaid was willing to do anything for her release, even if it meant risking his own life. As this film opens, Bryce is still brooding over losing his triple-A status, and is highly encouraged by his therapist (hilariously portrayed by Caroline Goodall) to put his guns away and go on a quiet, restful Italian holiday in Capri. As a bluegrass soundtrack bellows in the background, it become apparent his vacation will be short-lived when Sonia appears guns blazing, this time enlisting Michael to assist with rescuing Darius. Eventually, the trio are forced by Interpol agent Bobby (Frank Grillo) to track down a device possessed by a criminal named Aristotle (Antonio Banderas), who desires to thrust all of Europe into a blackout as revenge for sanctions on the Greek economy. Not quite as straight-faced as hit franchises like those about Ethan Hunt or James Bond, “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” thrives on making fun of this entire international spy/hitman premise while utilizing the charm of three of Hollywood’s most beloved stars: Hayek, Jackson, and Reynolds. All are immensely gifted at taking farce to a whole new level, one laden with four-letter words that make for a “mouth in need of an exorcism,” mixed with immense physicality that makes Hayek look like an Avenger from the MCU, and witty dialogue that sounds more improvised than scripted. Reynolds proves yet again why he thrives in satirical action-thriller flicks with the same command and comedic bravado that has given long-standing careers to the likes of Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, and Ben Stiller. Jackson is an unsung cinematic legend whose ownership of cursing to the point of making it sound like a completely different language laced with a little sugar and spice is always entertaining regardless of what film and genre he’s in. However, the real treat is watching an on-screen reunion between Banderas and Hayek. After more than 20 years, their chemistry is still just as palpable and thrilling as in Robert Rodriguez’s breakthrough “Desperado.” I could have just had the whole film revolve around their infused storyline. Hayek’s no-nonsense attitude in real-life melts into Sonia, making her a woman on-screen that is no one’s damsel in distress. Her ability to hold her own with the boys, kicking butt and taking names in fight scenes, leaves you wanting more every time. The extra added twist of having Morgan Freeman as Bryce’s dad (an award-winning bodyguard in his own right) be simultaneously dismissive with a fatherly vibe is also hysterical. There are also a few clever nods back to the original with the pair being surrounded by nuns, Sonia’s use of the word ‘cucaracha’ referring to Darius, bullets flying every two seconds, and the Lionel Richie hit “Hello” as the theme song for the hitman and his wife. Directed by Patrick Hughes, this comic book-energy spy adventure, gorgeously captured by cinematographer Terry Stacey and keenly scripted with barbed dialogue from Tom O’Connor, Brandon Murphy, and Phillip Murphy, is heavy on blood, guts, action, and star power. It really is time for a summer movie season again.

You don’t walk away from The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard feeling as if you didn’t experience something. It’s certainly something, but what it exactly is would be a mixture of laughter, headaches, confusion, and missed opportunities. The follow-up to The Hitman’s Bodyguard is hardly a movie audiences were asking for. I barely remembered the first one walking into my screening of the sequel. Ryan Reynolds is back as Michael Bryce, a triple-A rated bodyguard, that didn’t do his job well when he became mixed up with notorious hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson). Bryce is trying to recover from his bad luck, but only this time, instead of being forced to pair up with Kincaid to save the world, he now has Kincaid’s spitfire wife Sonia (Salma Hayek) as another asset to protect. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard moves fast, has unexpected bursts of violence, a few laughs, action that will give you a headache, and a paper thin plot. It’s not terrible, just not worth the valuable time.

The plot is somewhat simple? Bryce (Reynolds) is now in therapy to get over his failings as a bodyguard. He’s given up using guns, avoids accepting any jobs, and takes a trip to Greece for rest and relaxation. His rest is short-lived, with Sonia (Hayek) finding him during a shootout, as Darius has been kidnapped, and she needs Bryce to help her get him back. They quickly locate Darius, but when the trio comes together, they now find themselves in the middle of an Interpol investigation (led by an out of place Frank Grillo) needing their help to go undercover and stop international terrorist Aristotle Papadopolous (A cartoonish Antonio Banderas). It’s a mixture of a road trip and race against the clock to stop a bomb. There’s some action and laughs, but it’s a constant hammering on the head, and that will wear you down at the end.

Patrick Hughes returns in the director’s chair, with the screenplay written by Tom O’Connor, Brandon Murphy, and Phillip Murphy. There’s a solid foundation for making a movie such as this work, where you take known actors and put them in exotic locations, and put them in James Bond-like thrills. The problem with Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is that it commits multiple sins that kill momentum. 1) The jokes hit so fast that there’s no time to laugh. 2) Reynolds is an actor in the comedic side that must be taken with a grain of salt. On one side, he could be a new Steve Martin, and in other moments, he reminds me of Dane Cook. I was over him halfway through. 3) And the biggest crime of them all, is when Salma Hayek’s character is saddled, reduced to the kidnapped damsel in distress. Her performance and character is a gem, single handedly making this work. Her snappy attitude, mixed with her relationship with Jackson, which is filled with repetitive jokes of their insatiable sex lives, is the number one reason to buy a ticket to The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. It should be her movie, but it’s not.

Sadly, the narrative moves on from her, placing her in the captivity of Aristotle and his goons, and then it becomes a rescue mission from a massive yacht for the title Hitman and Bodyguard. Before that, the road trip stuff works a bit, a few laughs with unexpected action sequences, some that show flares of what James Cameron did in True Lies. The problem, however, is that it all feels underwhelming for the talent. I like to categorize a movie such as this as an airplane movie. It won’t change the trajectory of cinema or damage the careers of the cast. It will mildly entertain you while you’re 42,000 feet in the air on the way to your destination. I’d categorize that as not praise for a movie, but I guess it’s not the worst movie of 2021, and that’s not saying much either.

The third act is where the narrative loses itself, with a predictable sequence of events, Bryce finds his courage again, there’s some double crossing, and the friendship of Kincaid and Bryce becomes closer than it was before. There is a cameo at the end which is a funny reveal at first, but then grows stale fast. There’s a lot of that going on in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. A moment of laughter, a moment of groaning, your eyes will roll, and you might be mildly entertained. Much like it’s predecessor, this is a big nothing burger, with solid actors, in a series that will likely get a third installment. Either way, you won’t remember anything from the first two. And that sums up The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.
